Science
keeps trying but so far no one has been able to develop a material to match the
beauty, versatility, and long lasting value of wood.
•
Wood
doors come in the largest selection of styles. There is an almost unlimited
selection of styles available, from traditional to contemporary, simple to
highly decorative, as well as, craftsmen and bungalow.
•
Unlike
manmade materials, wood is offered in a large selection of sizes. Also, unlike manmade materials, wood can be
trimmed to obtain a perfect fit.
•
Since
wood comes in so many species and since you can use standard stains, wood will
give a much wider range of color options.
•
Contrary
to what you may have heard, wood is not a high maintenance material. The
important thing is to initially seal your door with a spar urethane, sometimes
called marine finish. If you apply three thin coats, you should only have to
reseal it every other year at the most, depending on exposure. With just
minimum maintenance, a properly made wood door should look good and provide
excellent service for many, many years.
•
With
energy prices rising, a wood door makes sense. There is no better insulating
material than wood. Wood is stable. Unlike metal or fiberglass wood is never
hot or cold to the touch. In addition, a wood door fits better in the jamb.
This is important since the greatest energy loss with a door is around the
jamb.
•
Wood
will not dent or rust like a metal door and it will not chalk like a fiberglass
door. If it ever gets damaged it is much easier to fix properly.
•
If
you are looking towards resale, a stained wood door will give your home better
curb appeal, as any real estate agent will tell you. There is a reason why
almost all churches have wood doors. A
wood door has a much more welcoming look.
•
Wood
has more intrinsic value. Would Grandmother’s heirloom mahogany table be as
desirable if it was made of fiberglass or metal? Like a fine piece of furniture,
a well made wood door will keep its appeal.
